Since coming to Taipei, many people have asked me what I think about the city. I have lived in Shanghai and Mumbai and, different from these two large, fast-paced Asian cities, I see Taipei as a place where people take time to pursue their own little bit of happiness or “小確幸.” Coffee, wine, traditional culture, sports, and food lovers – Taipei has them all! In Taipei it seems that there are entire industries dedicated to fulfilling even the smallest desires and that it is easy for a business person to turn a personal hobby into a business that can share that hobby with everyone. For example, I never would have thought that at the TongHua night market, I would find a shopkeeper from South America with a friend from Taiwan selling tostadas together! Even though I have only been in Taiwan for a few months, what I am looking forward to the most is continuing to explore Taiwan night markets (even beyond Taipei!), coffee shops, and restaurants so I can better understand the food culture here. Who knows...maybe I will also jump into the game and chase my own“小確幸” – baking cakes! - Ryan
